Frequently Asked Questions

Unsure about deciding to visit a psychologist? Here you will find answers to the most common questions, as well as more information about the services I provide.

What should I expect in the first session?

In our first session we get to know each other. I want to know who you are, how your life looks like, what makes you excited, what brings you here. I will also collect some basic information about you so that I can begin to get to know you better and easily understand your frame of reference as we work together. I will also explain to you how I work, who I am and how I can support you.

Are the sessions online or face-to-face?

Sessions take place both online and in person. This is depending on the needs and after communication with the therapist.

For how long should I visit a psychologist?
There is not actually a specific time frame. The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the issue and the needs of each person. That is why there is brief psychotherapy/counseling, which consists of a number of 8-10 sessions, and long-term psychotherapy, which can last from months to years!

So, the simple answer is “for as long as you want”! It is of course always important to discuss with your therapist and agree on a common plan together.
Personally, I ask people who come to my practice to discuss openly about their needs and concerns and to let me know when they wish to complete their treatment cycle so that we can have a final session as a closure.

How often should I visit my psychologist?
They last 50 minutes, except for couple sessions which last 75 minutes.
The frequency of the sessions varies, is dependent on the complexity of the issue and the needs of every person, and is jointly decided by the therapist and the patient.
Can I book a session for a friend or loved one?

Even though I understand that you want to give a helping hand to your loved one, this is not possible in my practice for several reasons. First of all, the person of interest should find their own strength and make this first step for themselves.

Secondly, this is a burden that you should not carry. If you try to support the person in need, have expressed your concerns and have suggested to them to start visiting a therapist, then you have already been valuable to them.

If you want to seek support for yourself however, you are also welcome. Depending on the complexity of the issues that our loved ones are facing, we ourselves might find psychological support useful.

What are my payment options?
Payment is currently available only via bank transfer. Other payment options can be discussed and arranged according to client needs and available options.
What happens if I want to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
That is fine! Cancelation 24 hours before our scheduled session is free of charge.

A no-show fee amounting to the full price of the session is charged, if the session is canceled less than 24 hours prior to the booking or in case of unannounced lateness of more than 10 minutes.

Are your services covered by insurance?
Currently, as a non dutch-speaking psychologist working in private practice in the Netherlands, I do not have contracts with insurance providers.

Although this may seem to be a disadvantage, dutch healthcare insurance demands a certain process from practitioners regarding when and how we treat our clients. However, this procedure might not suit everyone's needs. The way I treat my clients here in Therapy Sofa is focused on the use of a variety of tools and approaches, tailored to the needs of every individual.

This also means that -depending on my availability (usually 1-2 weeks)- there is almost no waiting time and you can start therapy immediately!
